They say you remember trauma more acutely than pleasure. If the memories of my first high dive experience are any indication, it’s true. My boys did not inherit my high dive angst. I was in fourth grade. No one made me do it, but it looked fun. Something akin to flying. So, in my least favorite faded-red swimsuit, I leapt to my near-death. A nanosecond after my limbs smacked the water, my head throbbed with pressure of chlorine water forced up my sinuses. I remember “rearranging” my … [Read more...]
Gifts for your Guests
It’s about this time each year that our vitamin D levels reach annual lows, and we start aching for sunshine. As the mercury peeks over the 50 degree mark I’m itchin’ to start grillin’ with friends!! After six months of winter we need the friendship, the outside perspective, and the laughs that come with hosting friends. But sometimes it’s hard to feel like the hostess-with-the-mostest when the house has been so…lived in…all winter. May I suggest we rebel against that notion, and consider … [Read more...]
Almost There
They're two of the most hopeful words in the English language. “Almost there.” Perhaps it was my affinity for imagining the human details of the Christmas story. I’ve tried to write them all down on my calendar. I’ve locked them in my phone’s calendar app and tagged most of them with reminders. I’ve stuck post-it notes to my phone, purse, and steering wheel. I’ve even been confronted by my boys for writing on … [Read more...]
Run Your Race

There was a brief period of my life where I hesitantly referred to myself as a “runner.” “Shuffler” would have been a more accurate term, but for clarity’s sake I said “runner.” Though I didn’t set any land-speed or distance records, I did learn a lot about tenacity. And my brief tenure as a “runner” has been an apt metaphor for almost … [Read more...]
