How I Learned about “Murder, Motherhood & Miraculous Grace”

By shauna Leave a Comment

It’s always risky to share a hotel room with a stranger. Some would call it crazy. But I did it anyway. Lest you think I’m completely out of my mind, the risk was mitigated by the fact that my roommate and I were both women attending a Christian Writers conference in Estes Park, Colorado. By the time we met on that May evening in 2014, I was exhausted. I had driven eight hours, located registration, lodging, dining and classrooms, and attended a pre-conference session. When the first key-note … [Read more...]

When “Let Go and Let God” is Bad Advice

By shauna 2 Comments

Around here, and maybe in your back yard too, the crops are drying up. Days are shorter. Evenings are cooler. Sunflowers have bowed their heads and corn stalks have gone crispy. The landscape isn't as lovely as it was this summer, but brown fields mean harvest time is coming. It's a perfect metaphor for the benefits of hanging on in brown and dry seasons of life. Today we have a guest who has written beautifully about "hanging on." My friend and fellow author, Jennifer Dukes Lee is with us today … [Read more...]

When the Story Comes True

By shauna Leave a Comment

It was a story I’d heard all my life, or a version of it anyway. Yesterday, it came true. My grandpa, the same one I wrote about last summer, who’s systematic prayer life explains a lot about my own life, was a storyteller extraordinaire. Besides that, he had learned his mother's tried and true play-it-by-ear piano techniques—major and minor chords, the trilling of an octave, and a jolly be-bopping melody--and when he combined the two, it was a grand performance. But his performances were … [Read more...]

An Easter Ballad for the Day In Between

By shauna Leave a Comment

I can trace my love of imaginative, biblical narrative round and round the grooves of an LP 33 speed record album. Maybe you don’t remember, but a record album (pronounced reh-kerd al-buh-m) was in popular use shortly after the invention of the wheel and hieroglyphics--or so it seems. In the late 70s my parents bought an advanced piece of music technology. A stereo. This miracle of musical machinery was ensconced behind glass doors to reiterate the fact that all the blinking knobs and … [Read more...]

Unlikely Reasons for Gratitude: Change

By shauna 4 Comments

In 1987 on their debut album, the group Exposé had a song called "Seasons Change." It was a pop culture lament over lost love and time. Thirty years later that song still occasionally gets stuck in my head. "Change" gets a bad rap, especially in the song. But recently I've been really thankful for change. For instance, we’re done with elementary school. We have three--almost 4--drivers in the family. Everyone sleeps. It’s a world away from where I was 12 years ago. In the fall of 2005 I … [Read more...]

Instagram post 2191458583400244759_642024060 A SILENCED SKEPTIC // DAY 4 {EXCERPT}⠀
⠀
“Then an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing at the right side of the altar of incense. When Zechariah saw him, he was startled and was gripped with fear… Meanwhile, the people were waiting for Zechariah and wondering why he stayed so long in the temple. When he came out, he could not speak to them. They realized he had seen a vision in the temple, for he kept making signs to them but remained unable to speak.” ~ Luke 1:11-22⠀
⠀
A sudden breeze pushed his beard to one side. ⠀
⠀
The sound of enormous wings settling into place startled him. ⠀
⠀
Zechariah jumped and opened his eyes to too much bright light.⠀
⠀
He mumbled a plea for mercy as he staggered backward. ⠀
⠀
Before him stood a creature like nothing he’d ever seen. Gold and lightning, bronze and fire had all collided into a man. When Zechariah’s eyes had adjusted to the tremendous brightness, he could see a resemblance to carvings in the wood and gold of the temple.⠀
⠀
But this was no carving. Afraid to look upward, Zechariah kept his eyes on a hem of crisp, white linen and the tail end of a golden sash swaying in the unexplainable breeze.⠀
⠀
Trembling, he reached to steady himself, but found nothing. ⠀
⠀
Surely, he had offended God. Offered the wrong coals, or the wrong incense, or entered with the wrong heart. Death by radiance would be his end.⠀
⠀
Zechariah raised his forearm to shield his eyes. His sleeve was no protection from the brilliance. His knees buckled and slammed onto the marble floor. ⠀
⠀
A voice spoke. “Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard.”⠀
⠀
He peeked from behind his translucent sleeve. My prayer? Which one? he wanted to ask, but holy fear left him speechless.⠀

Instagram post 2191159655454938395_642024060 For those of us who’ve heard the Christmas story a time or ten thousand, there is a tendency to slide right through Luke 2 this time of year without much thought.⠀
⠀
It hasn’t changed since last year -- or for the past two millennia for that matter. There doesn’t seem to be much in this story that applies to ministry, work, marriage, or parenthood. Sometimes it’s hard to imagine the Christmas story as anything but nostalgia and rehearsal.⠀
⠀
The people God chose were not worthy of human notice in their era. Yet two thousand years later they are household names, the subjects of stained glass, sermons, and statuettes. Each of their stories points to God who orchestrated the events of their ordinary lives to achieve His extraordinary plan.⠀
⠀
God reached into their ordinary lives and shattered their small plans in order to create a divine mosaic from the broken pieces.⠀
⠀
For Elizabeth, whose aches and fatigue had long ago caused her to stop begging for children, God granted the biggest surprise of her life: a resurrected biology and the certainty of knowing that her son would grow to be great in God’s sight (Luke 1:57).⠀
⠀
For Joseph, whose obedience meant embarrassment and disgrace, God rescued him with new instructions in a dream he could never have imagined. ⠀
⠀
And for young Mary, God granted courage and humility to declare herself the Lord’s servant. Even if it meant being thought a liar, an adulterer, and maybe a single mom, she pledged her life, and the use of her womb, to God (Luke 1:38).⠀
⠀
God is still seeking those whose hearts are likewise committed to Him. (2 Chronicles 16:9).⠀
⠀
God is looking for you. For you who are faithful with the little things, who maintain integrity before God in the smallest details. ⠀
⠀
Despite corruption in ministry. Despite life-long disappointments. Despite obedience that requires a disturbing reversal. And despite the perceptions of others.⠀
⠀
God is seeking faithful obedience from ordinary people—like you and me—to fulfill His extraordinary plan.⠀
⠀
The story of Christmas is proof.

Instagram post 2186403564925764224_642024060 FAITHFUL TO THE HOLY // DAY 3 {EXCERPT}⠀
Zechariah rolled over in his bed with a groan and winced. Yesterday’s journey to Jerusalem was exhausting. His muscles complained at every movement, but his spirit was eager. "Pity to lie here in the dark when I’ve traveled all this way to the house of God," he thought as he propped on his elbow and eased himself upright. Priests who lived in the hill country outside of Jerusalem slept in a series of rooms that formed the interior of the temple walls. Sunlight was scarce there. It made sleep comfortable and waking up difficult. ⠀
⠀
“This is the day the Lord has made, men,” Zechariah announced to his fellow priests to wake them, “Let us rejoice and be glad.” He reached for his oil lamp. Its diminishing flame whimpered for more oil, and Zechariah filled it. He proceeded to every man’s bedside, topping off each lamp until the room brightened and the men woke.⠀
⠀
Despite his aching, the older he got, the more precious the privilege of serving God became.⠀
⠀
He thought of Elizabeth, at home alone, and he prayed the Romans would not cause a stir while he was gone. If there was a ruckus, no one was there to comfort or protect her except equally helpless neighbors. Every day, Zechariah and Elizabeth prayed for God to send his Messiah—the king he had promised—to deliver them from the ruling Romans.⠀
⠀
But they were still oppressed. ⠀
⠀
Oppressed, yet provided for. God cared for them, there was no doubt. In their many years of marriage God had seen them through famine and war. They had food and shelter, friends and family. ⠀
⠀
Still, there was a gaping void.⠀
