Making Stories Come to Life this Summer

By shauna Leave a Comment

It was the only thing on our summer bucket-list that actually required a bucket, and it started on the banks of the Sugar Creek. It also included one of the manliest cooking "tools" in the world. I wrote about it today over at The MOB (Mothers of Boys) Society's Blog. And I've included some pictures of our process below. Incredibly, veggies, fish and even sweetcorn were cooked to perfection! Be sure to check out why in the world we did this over at The MOB … [Read more...]

Familiar Strangers of Holy Week

By shauna Leave a Comment

When it comes to the events of Holy Week and the Easter story, we sometimes find ourselves in the precarious place of overfamiliarity. On the one hand, familiarity is a gift. Knowing these parts of the Bible so well helps us understand other parts that are less celebrated. On the other hand, we live in a world that is constantly careening toward the next new thing. Continual news feed keeps us chasing the most current information. Breaking news and discoveries are only new for a matter of … [Read more...]

The Resolution I Kept: Year 3

By shauna 4 Comments

New Year Resolutions for me used to include vague ambitions such as, “Read More Books.” And after so many years of never knowing whether or not I actually read more books, I changed my resolution to read, “Keep track of books I read.” It’s specific and measurable…like a good resolution ought to be. With the simple change of wording, there was no pressure to hurry through stories or finish books I didn’t like. I simply committed to write down the titles I read. In some years, I didn’t … [Read more...]

A Strategic Plan for Black Friday and Advent

By shauna Leave a Comment

Thanksgiving is just 2 days away. Which means the biggest shopping day of the year is just 3 days away. For about 50 reasons that I won’t recount here, I’ve never been much of a shopper. I mean I like spending money, and I like getting new things, I like cute clothes, shoes, and good books. But it’s the laborious process of trying stuff on, finding the right thing, the walking, and waiting, the in-and-out of parking lots and cars and lines, that I’ve never been a huge fan of. So “Black … [Read more...]

An Easy Burden?

By shauna 2 Comments

It’s one of my favorite verses. It even appears at the end of everything you read here. Sometimes it seems a little funny to quote the whole verse though because its context is colored with an unfamiliar agricultural metaphor. What on earth is a yoke? In modern terms, it was a farm implement. The apparatus that bound two animals together in their work of pulling the plow. While the stronger animal bore the bulk of the weight, a smaller, younger animal learned from him. He learned the … [Read more...]

HI THERE!

I’m Shauna, and I help worn-out Christians find permanent rest and relief by retelling gospel stories that highlight Jesus’ kindness toward ordinary people like us.

In my books and on this blog, I weave history, theology, and fictional detail into a fresh retelling of familiar Bible stories. I started writing them because I needed them. When I shared my stories, people said they made the Bible come to life.

If you could use some permanent rest and relief, download my free Bible story devotional.
