7 Reasons I Can’t be the Umpire

By shauna Leave a Comment

Umpires for Little League seem to be in short supply around here so a couple times per seasons the parents are required to ump. Although this sounds efficient, it’s probably not the best solution—at least in my case.    When it was our turn to ump, I contacted a whole list of umpires potentially available to cover parental umpire duty. They were all unavailable. In circumstances when it's more work to get out of work, I can tend to get over … [Read more...]

A Post-Mother’s Day Reflection

By shauna 3 Comments

Super-mom forgot to supervise. Did you ever imagine motherhood would be a ride like THIS?I always wanted to be a mom. I’m just not always the mom I wanted to be. Here’s a little confession: I actually remember telling someone I wanted to be a supermom. I know… But somehow confessing, recounting, and laughing about it redeems the weirdness. The supermom I wanted to be drove a minivan. She had long hair that didn’t tangle when she drove with the windows open. She sewed adorable dresses from 4-H … [Read more...]

Unlikeable Love

By shauna Leave a Comment

Unlikeable love?? At first glance you may be thinking of that pink or red carnation you received from a “secret admirer” in ninth grade. At my high school, an artificially colored pink carnation delivered to your locker on Valentine’s Day meant “I like you.” But a red one…oh my…meant “I love you.” An affordable expression of affection! What better way for hormonally charged teenagers to express their feelings than without words and anonymously? (Anonymously in so far as you … [Read more...]

Run Your Race

By shauna Leave a Comment

Photo by Bob Jagendorf 'Tis the season to be racing. State track meets, 5Ks, 10Ks, half-marathons, marathons and ultra-marathons (Lord, save me!) There was a brief period of my life where I hesitantly referred to myself as a “runner.” “Shuffler” would have been a more accurate term, but for clarity’s sake I said “runner.” Though I didn’t set any land-speed or distance records, I did learn a lot about tenacity. And my brief tenure as a “runner” has been an apt metaphor for almost … [Read more...]

Happy Mother’s Day!!

By shauna Leave a Comment

Perhaps you read my helpful indicator for teachers earlier this week. I am glad to report I’ve updated it with a few lines from Levi’s first grade teacher and her twin sister. They are the real deal. And they’re hilarious too. Frankly, I have a more experience as a mom than a teacher. So, just in case you’re so sleep deprived and harried, that you can’t remember whether or not you’re a mom, I devised a simple indicator.   You Might be a … [Read more...]

HI THERE!

I’m Shauna, and I help worn-out Christians find permanent rest and relief by retelling gospel stories that highlight Jesus’ kindness toward ordinary people like us.

In my books and on this blog, I weave history, theology, and fictional detail into a fresh retelling of familiar Bible stories. I started writing them because I needed them. When I shared my stories, people said they made the Bible come to life.

If you could use some permanent rest and relief, download my free Bible story devotional.
