The World Does Not Know Her Name

By shauna 8 Comments

Last week lots of women marched in lots of different locations. They marched in different manners and for different reasons. Millions and millions of women, with different beliefs, opinions, and motivations, held this in common: all of them long to affect change. To influence. Influence is a sacred trust. An interviewer once asked a well-known Christian woman, “Who is the most influential Christian woman in America?” I doubt the interviewer expected her response. She answered, "The … [Read more...]

One Thing is Necessary

By shauna Leave a Comment

{This work of fiction is based on the framework of Luke 10:38-42.} Martha tip-toed into the room where Jesus was speaking to the guests. She padded around the table setting plates at each spot. She did not want to disturb him or her other guests. She did, however, want to disturb Mary. She let the last plate clatter into place to get Mary’s attention. But no one noticed. Not even Mary. Martha hurried back to the kitchen where the kettle was spitting into the fire. She … [Read more...]

Show Up in the Dark, Just like Jesus

By shauna Leave a Comment

Sometimes the world seems scrambled. A lot of the time actually. It’s hard to understand why things happen or why they are allowed to happen. I’m regularly taking refuge in this fact: chaos in the world does not mean Christ is not at work. We’re just one calendar flip away from Christmas, and just two weeks from the first Sunday of the season of Advent. The world seems a little dark as we look toward preparing and celebrating Christ’s coming. But I’m reminded that Christ came in the … [Read more...]

Where to Find Relief from a Noisy Election Cycle

By shauna Leave a Comment

The first election cycle I remember paying attention to is only memorable to me because of the fear I had as I watched the results roll in. The votes were tipped toward the candidate that wasn’t “our guy.” And “we” lost. I had listened to radio broadcast, news reports, and the adults in my life talk about what kind of world we’d live in if “our guy” lost. And when “our guy” did lose, I half expected to wake up a political exile. I know the people around me didn't mean to be fear mongers. … [Read more...]

When Trick or Treaters Make You Think of Jesus

By shauna Leave a Comment

Before pinterest I had to come up with kid costumes on my own. And since visual design isn't one of my strong suits, I came up with exactly one costume. All three of my boys wore it for the year or two that it fit. Only every year, it seemed at least one of them had a fever or some version of the flu, so I never really took them out in their adorable scarecrow costume. A picture on the deck was a far as we got. So when I took my youngest son trick-or-treating last year I was enthralled with … [Read more...]

HI THERE!

I’m Shauna, and I help worn-out Christians find permanent rest and relief by retelling gospel stories that highlight Jesus’ kindness toward ordinary people like us.

In my books and on this blog, I weave history, theology, and fictional detail into a fresh retelling of familiar Bible stories. I started writing them because I needed them. When I shared my stories, people said they made the Bible come to life.

If you could use some permanent rest and relief, download my free Bible story devotional.
